CARRIAGEWORKS THEATRE ACADEMY perform at
HOLOCAUST MEMORIAL DAY

This Sunday (24 Jan) the Carriageworks Theatre Academy performed in front of hundreds of people as part of the Holocaust Memorial event at Leeds Town Hall.

The group of 23 students plus one student of technical theatre gave a 15 minute presentation based on the artwork and poems of the children of the Terezin Concentration Camp.

This moving and beautiful piece not only gave the students the opportunity and the privilege of meeting Iby Knill, a Holocaust Survivor, but also to explore the experiences of children their own age in such a desperate situation.

However the piece gave way to a message of hope concluding with the planting of a tree. This true story saw the seedlings of the concentration camp tree being sent throughout the world as a constant reminder and provocation for us to respect and love one another. The students then read the fourth of seven commitments.

It was a great honour for the students to take part in this event and all the team at The Carriageworks and Theatre Company Blah Blah Blah were deeply proud of their mature and focused approach in producing what is there second piece of work together.

PRESS RELEASE
6th January 2010

There's No Business like Snow Business

Snow White and her fellow cast members ensured the show did go on as they braved the cold weather to perform to an audience of just nine people yesterday (Wednesday 6 January).

Despite the snow a group of four adults and five children  made it to The Carriageworks  to see the Leeds' theatre's seasonal pantomime, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, for a fabulous show, followed by a  special meeting with the cast.

With treacherous conditions bringing much of the country to a standstill, these nine  adventurous audience members decided they wouldn't let the weather beat them and turned out in full voice to support and enjoy the pantomime.
The Carriageworks was one of the very few theatres open yesterday, for a spectacular show that kicked off the final week of the pantomime.
The annual panto has had  its most successful year ever, with over 16,500 people attending  -  their festive cheers and boos raising the roof of a packed Carriageworks house.

Leeds City Council executive member for Leisure,  Councillor  John Procter,  said:
“It is fabulous that the Carriageworks was open to entertain this enthusiastic audience. From the sounds of it, it was a  great  show, and I am sure the cast did a brilliant job.”

Mrs Marilyn Cohen, one of the nine audience members, from Audley, Leeds, took her three year old granddaughter Leyla Rose Cohen to see the pantomime.
Marilyn said:
“It was a wonderful experience and the best pantomime I have ever been to. It was brilliant being one of only  a  few people, as Muddles kept calling out Leyla’s name - and she even got a kiss from the Prince at the end! It was truly magical to see her face throughout the show and we both thoroughly enjoyed the panto.”

Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs is in its final week of performances and will end on Saturday 9 January 2010.

Tickets are still available and are on sale from the  City Centre Box Office by calling 0113 224 3801. They can also be booked online by visiting the Carriageworks website atwww.carriageworkstheatre.org.

Snow White Mirror competition

Local schools across Leeds were invited by the Carriageworks theatre to design a mirror out of objects such as recycled materials and junk. All the mirrors entered in the competition will be displayed in the theatre throughout the pantomime, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, with the winners getting free tickets to the show.

Horsforth Featherbank Infant School, Class 2 were the winners, discovered when Emmerdale favourite Jean Rogers, dressed as the Evil Queen, visited their school to surprise them.
To win the competition, the school beat 15 designs submitted by seven different schools from around the Leeds area.
The winning mirror was made of recycled materials found in the classroom and around the pupils houses, including old CDs, nails, and silver foil paper amongst other items.
