Mon 1 January 0001 - Wed 6 March 2019
The Leeds Library (New Room)
As part of the Leeds Lit Fest 2019
One of the best-loved and most vibrant spoken word nights in Yorkshire, Chelping has brought internationally renowned poets to Leeds' now 251-year-old library. Last years guests included Joelle Taylor, Sabrina Mahfouz, Theresa Lola, Cecilia Knapp and many more.
Our March event will feature sets from Jess Green and Steven B Williams, plus open mic slots. The event will be hosted by Chelping programmer Matt Abbott Poet.
Crowned BBC Poetry Slam Champion in 2018, Jess has performed at festivals including Glastonbury, Latitude, Bestival and the Edinburgh Fringe, and her poem 'Dear Mr Gove' is a YouTube hit with nearly half a million views. Jess runs Leicester poetry night Find The Right Words, which was shortlisted for Best Regular UK Poetry Event in the Saboteur Awards 2018.
Her début collection 'Burning Books' (Burning Eye Books) was shortlisted for the East Midlands Book Award 2015 and was the transcript of her 5* spoken word show set in an inner city secondary school suffering under the Coalition government. The theatre adaptation of Burning Books was longlisted for the Bread & Roses Theatre Award 2016 and performed to sell-out audiences at Curve Theatre in Leicester, and has since been touring the country.
Jess' second collection 'A Self Help Guide To Being In Love With Jeremy Corbyn' (also on Burning Eye) sees her falling head over heels in love with the Labour leader and his “raw Communist sex appeal”. She took the poetry and music show version to last year’s Edinburgh Fringe, where it received rave reviews - plus an endorsement from Mr Corbyn himself, deeming it “fantastic”.
STEVEN B. WILLIAMS
Steven B. Williams is a novelist, poet, blogger and playwright based in Wakefield. His début novel 'Heartsnare' was published by Lethe
Press in 2016, and in the same year, he was the joint winner of The Black Horse Poets' 'Writer Of The Year' award.
Steven is rapidly carving a name for himself on the Yorkshire poetry scene and currently working on his début collection.
One of the rising stars of the UK's flourishing spoken word scene, Matt Abbott recently completed a 22-date national tour with his critically acclaimed one-man show 'Two Little Ducks'. This was accompanied by the release of his début collection on VERVE poetry press, which included the poems from the show plus 'Selected Poems 2015-2018'.
Matt formed spoken word record label Nymphs & Thugs in spring 2015 and fronts alternative music act Skint & Demoralised.
Please note that we are strictly limited to 6 open mic slots. The slots last 5 minutes, and are available on a first come, first served basis. Please email Matt on firstname.lastname@example.org to reserve your slot.
