As part of the 4th Yorkshire Silent Film Festival

This special screening of one of British silent film’s masterpieces will be brought to vivid life by one of the world’s finest silent film pianists and composers, Neil Brand.

Dive into Jazz Age London with this visually stunning noir-ish cocktail of West End glitter and East End seediness. Chinese American screen goddess Anna May Wong stars as Shosho, a scullery maid in a fashionable London nightclub who beguiles her way to becoming the club’s star attraction the erotic obsession of club owner Valentine Wilmot. German émigré director E.A. Dupont brings opulence, passion, and a surprisingly direct approach to the issue of race – though the censors ruled out an actual kiss between Anna May Wong and co-star Jameson Thomas.

Yorkshire Silent Film Festival presents an annual festival and a year-round programme of live-scored film across Yorkshire.
