A play by David Hare

The play is set  in 1995.

Kyra is a hardworking teacher at a rundown school in East Ham in London. She receives an unexpected visit from Edward, the 18 year old son of Tom, a successful restaurateur. Kyra had a relationship with Tom which ended three years ago when Tom’s wife discovered it.

Edward is looking for help for his father, who he believes is not coping very well with life since his wife died a year ago.

After Edward leaves, Tom arrives, also unexpectedly and unconnected to Edward’s visit.

The play charts the efforts of these three characters to come to terms with where they are now in relation to each other.

As with all David Hare’s work, the characters are complex, their needs are far from simple and nothing in their lives is certain. The dialogue cracks along as Tom and Kyra try to fathom out whether or not they should start again, and as each tries to draw out the real motives behind their behaviour, past and present.

It is an intensely memorable, absorbing and interesting piece of drama.

Rehearsed entirely in lockdown and recorded live and COVID safe on the Carriageworks stage, this season has been created with the astonishing commitment, talent and drive of Leeds Community Arts Network, who are committed to keeping the arts alive for everyone.

Enjoy this Performance and the entire season safe and sound in the comfort of your own home. This is extraordinary theatre created by extraordinary people in extraordinary times.
