Our History
Our Home
Carriageworks Theatre is located on the first floor level of the Electric Press development on Millennium Square, Leeds. Overlooking an historic glass-roofed and heated courtyard which in early Victorian times was the home of the West Riding Carriage Manufactory.
The Electric Press Development incorporates The Electric Press building (Grade II listed) which was built in 1894 and was used by Chorley and Pickersgill as a printing works.
The Foundations of Creativity
Carriageworks Theatre officially opened its doors in November 2005, following the closure of the Leeds Civic Theatre earlier that year. This new beginning was made possible thanks to the tireless efforts of passionate individuals and community arts groups who campaigned for a dedicated space for local theatre in Leeds.
Their voices helped shape the Carriageworks Theatre into what it is today; a modern,
purpose-built, and fully accessible venue for the arts in the heart of Leeds.
